Letter, September 6, 1940, from Mel Ott to Bob Mantler informing Mantler that he will be unable to perfrom an interview and he should seek out another player to replace him. However, Mantler did interview him during a doubleheader intermission. the letter from Ott is on New York Giants letterhead. Also included is a letter dated October 27, 1979 from J. Robert Mantler to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, donating and explaining the Mel Ott letter. The letter explaing the donation is one page, typed, and signed by Mr. Mantler; the letter from Mr. Ott is one page, handwritten, and signed by Mr. Ott.

Mel Ott played his entire career with the New York Giants (1926-1947, 1942-1947 as player-manager). After his playing career, Ott managed the Giants (1948), managed in the minor leagues, and worked as a broadcaster for the Detroit Tigers.
